This gorgeous and rare Art Nouveau gilded bronze vase was made by Paul Louchet in Paris sometime between 1890 and 1910. The French artist Paul Louchet (1854–1936), who produced both paintings and sculptures, is regarded as a major figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Both the leader of the “Chambre Syndicale des Fabricant Bronze” and a bronze caster.
The vase features Titania, within water reeds and water lotus leaves. She is the fairy queen and the Fairy King’s wife, a character from William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The vase is stamped “LOUCHET” underneath and measures 10″ (25.4cm).
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by William Shakespeare in 1595–1596, features a character named Titania. She appears in the play as Oberon’s wife and the Fairy King’s wife. Shakespeare’s influence led to modern writing sometimes referring to fairy queen characters as “Titania.”
