A Tray By Emile Gallé of a Castle Ruin

A tray made by Emile Gallé (Établissements Gallé), France Nancy 1928–1936, in very good condition.

The marquetry on the tray is made from a beautiful variety blend of rich wood veneers, such as rosewood, walnut, maple, and fruitwoods.

With two handles shaped like chimaeras, confirming the motif’s mediaeval origin; in Greek mythology’s Chimaera is a fire-breathing she-monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail.

Picturing a castle ruin in a mountainous scene. Size: 44.5cm (17 1/2 inches) from handle to handle.

Most Emile Gallé (Établissements Gallé) trays were introduced after Galle’s death, in the late mid 1920’s. As reference you can find this identical design in ‘Galle Furniture’ by Alastair Duncan, page 346, plate 15.
